What a GPA Actually Measures
A grade point average is a credit-weighted mean, not a plain average of your grades. A four-credit course counts twice as heavily as a two-credit one, which is why a strong grade in a lab-heavy science course moves the number far more than the same grade in a one-credit seminar. Averaging the letters by hand ignores that and usually produces a figure that is optimistically wrong.
This calculator does the weighting for you. Enter each course with its grade and credit value, choose the scale your institution uses, and you get the same number the registrar would compute, for a single semester, or cumulatively once you add every course you have taken.
How to Calculate Your GPA
You need three things per course: the grade, the credit value, and the scale your school grades on.
- Pick the scale your institution uses. If you are unsure, check whether an A+ appears on your transcript with a value above 4.0, that is the quickest way to tell a 4.3 or 4.5 scale from a 4.0 one.
- Add one row per course, entering the grade you received.
- Enter the credit value of each course. This is usually listed on your transcript as credits, credit hours or units, and it is the number that determines how much each grade counts.
- Include every course that carries credit toward the average, including ones you did poorly in, leaving those out is the most common reason a hand-calculated GPA comes out too high.
- Read the result. To get a cumulative GPA rather than a semester GPA, add every course from every term rather than just the current one.
- To test a scenario, change a grade and watch the result move. This is how you find out what you actually need next term.
The Formula, and Why Credits Matter
The calculation is the sum of each course grade point multiplied by its credits, divided by the total credits. A student taking a 4-credit course with an A (4.0) and a 1-credit course with a C (2.0) has 18 grade points across 5 credits, giving 3.6, not the 3.0 that averaging the two letters would suggest.
This is also why a single bad grade hurts unevenly. Failing a 4-credit core course does far more damage than failing a 1-credit elective, and recovering from it takes proportionally more credits of strong work. When planning a term, look at where the credits sit rather than at how many courses you are taking.

Percentage bands are the common US convention and vary by institution, some treat 90 as an Aโ and others as an A. The grade point values are far more standardised than the percentages that map onto them.
Cases the Simple Formula Does Not Cover
Pass/fail courses normally carry credit toward graduation but are excluded from the GPA entirely, so leave them out rather than entering them as a passing grade. Withdrawals usually do not count either, though a withdrawal recorded as a failure does. Transfer credits are commonly accepted for credit but not folded into the GPA at the receiving institution.
Repeated courses are the case that varies most. Some schools replace the original grade, some average the two attempts, and some keep both on the transcript while counting only the higher one. Since the policy decides the answer, check yours before assuming a retake will lift your average by as much as you hope.
