The Days That Actually Matter in a Cycle
Conception is possible on far fewer days than most people assume. An egg survives around twelve to twenty-four hours after release, while sperm can survive up to five days in the reproductive tract, which means the fertile window runs from about five days before ovulation to one day after it, and the days after that window are not fertile at all.

How to Estimate Your Fertile Window
Two inputs drive the estimate, and cycle regularity determines how much weight to put on it.
- Enter the first day of your last menstrual period, the day bleeding started.
- Enter your average cycle length, counted from the first day of one period to the day before the next. Twenty-eight days is the default, but anything from 21 to 35 is common.
- Read the estimated ovulation date and the fertile window around it.
- Note that the estimate assumes the luteal phase, ovulation to next period, is about fourteen days. That phase is the more stable half of the cycle; variation usually sits in the first half.
- If your cycles vary by more than a few days, treat the window as approximate and consider tracking signs directly rather than relying on the calendar.
Why Calendar Estimates Are Only a Starting Point
The calendar method works backwards from an assumed fourteen-day luteal phase, which is reasonable on average but varies between people and between cycles. Anything that shifts ovulation, illness, stress, travel, disrupted sleep, changes in weight or training load, moves the whole window with it, and the calendar has no way to know that happened.
Direct signs are more informative for anyone whose cycles are irregular. Basal body temperature rises slightly after ovulation, confirming it happened but only in hindsight. Cervical mucus becomes clearer and more slippery in the days before, which is a forward-looking sign. Ovulation predictor kits detect the luteinising hormone surge that precedes release by roughly a day or two.

Note that with a short cycle the fertile window can overlap the end of a period, which is why "you cannot conceive during your period" is not reliable as a rule.
What This Tool Is Not For
This is not a contraceptive method. Calendar-based approaches have a substantially higher failure rate than other forms of contraception even when followed carefully, because ovulation timing shifts and sperm survive for days. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, use a method designed for that purpose and discuss the options with a healthcare provider.
It is also general information rather than medical advice. Irregular or absent cycles, cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, and difficulty conceiving after several months of trying are all worth raising with a doctor, since they can point to something a calendar cannot detect.
