Where "Eight Glasses a Day" Came From
The most repeated hydration advice in the world has a traceable and slightly embarrassing origin. A 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation suggested roughly 2.5 litres of water a day for adults, and then added, in the very next sentence, that most of that quantity is contained in prepared foods.
That second sentence dropped out of the retelling. What survived was the number, detached from the qualification that made it accurate, and it has been repeated for eighty years as though it referred to water you must drink on top of everything else.
The practical correction is that food contributes a meaningful share of daily fluid, commonly estimated at a fifth to a third, more if your diet is heavy in fruit, vegetables and soup. Tea, coffee, milk and juice all count too. The mild diuretic effect of caffeine does not cancel out the fluid the drink contains.
What Actually Determines Your Requirement
Body mass is the usual starting point because fluid needs scale roughly with it, and that is what this calculator uses. But three other factors move the answer more than a few kilograms of body weight does.

Any figure a calculator produces is therefore a baseline for an ordinary day, not a target to hit regardless of what the day contains.
The Signal Worth Reading
Thirst is a reasonable guide for most healthy adults, and urine colour is a more reliable one. Pale straw suggests adequate hydration; dark amber suggests you are behind. It is a cheap check that needs no counting and adjusts itself to the day you are actually having.
Two caveats. Thirst becomes less reliable with age, which is why older adults are advised to drink on a schedule rather than waiting for the signal. And B vitamins turn urine bright yellow regardless of hydration, so a supplement can make the check useless for a few hours.
More Is Not Better
Drinking substantially more than you need is not a free health measure. Hyponatraemia, dangerously diluted blood sodium, is rare but real, and it occurs when large volumes are consumed faster than the kidneys can excrete them. Endurance athletes and participants in drinking challenges are the usual cases.
Healthy kidneys clear roughly 0.8 to 1 litre per hour at most. Spreading intake through the day rather than consuming litres in a short window is what keeps you comfortably inside that limit, and it is also more effective, since fluid taken faster than it can be absorbed is simply excreted.
Anyone with kidney disease, heart failure, or on diuretics or lithium should follow their clinician's fluid guidance rather than a general calculation. In those conditions the correct intake can be substantially restricted, and a generic target is not merely unhelpful but wrong.
None of the above substitutes for clinical judgement. The calculation is a starting estimate; persistent thirst, marked changes in urine output, or dizziness are reasons to speak to a doctor rather than to adjust a number.
